What Are All-on-Six and All-on-Eight Implants?
Dental implants are inserted into your bone in place of natural tooth roots. They also provide support to the teeth/denture/bridge. Together, the implant and the fixed denture work like your natural teeth.
When 6 or 8 implants or "tooth roots" are used to support the upper or lower arch, the system is called "All-on-6" or" All-on-8". Know the difference between All-on-6 and All-on-8 dental implants.
Dental implants are an improvement over conventional removable dentures because:
- Implant posts mimic natural tooth roots and minimize bone loss in the surrounding bone.[1]
- Their survival rate is excellent and can last a lifetime.[2]
- The denture on implants is fixed and will not wobble or shift in your mouth like removable dentures. This allows you to eat as you would have with natural teeth.
- The fixed denture does not need to be removed for cleaning.
Dental Implant Procedure
Evaluation
- The dentist will evaluate your oral cavity for treatment planning. To keep a record, they will take pictures, X-rays, and CT scans.
- They will also identify the need for any pre-surgery procedures.
Prerequisite Procedures (If Needed)
To make the implant site as healthy as possible, some basic procedures may be done. These include RCT, scaling, and filling.
Bone Grafting (If Needed)
A minimum bone height and width are a must to support the implants. If you have bone loss, your dentist may recommend a bone graft surgery, which helps bone formation.
It takes four to six months for the bone to grow and be ready for implants.
Zygomatic implants in Mexico offer an ideal solution for patients with insufficient bone quality in the upper jaw. These implants bypass the need for bone grafts by anchoring directly into the zygomatic bone (cheekbone).
Implant and Teeth Placement
The dentist will give you local anesthesia or conscious sedation. Implants will be inserted in your bone, on top of which a fixed denture/ dental bridge is fitted.
You can eat soft food as soon as the effect of anesthesia wears off.
Healing Phase
The implant and the bone integrate with each other for 3 - 6 months. This process of healing is called "Osseointegration."
Porcelain Denture Placement
After the healing is complete, the porcelain denture is placed, which can withstand stronger biting forces. You can skip this step if your biting force is not strong.

All-on-6 and All-on-8 are similar in every way except for the number of implants. All-on-8 implants distribute the weight of the fixed denture better because of more number of implants.
All-on-8 implants are chosen over All-on-6 implants when the bone is too soft, which may make the denture unstable. Here, 8 implants provide better support and keep the denture stable.
All-on-4 implants can be placed in your bone even you have poor bone quality and eliminate bone graft surgery. However, if one implant fails, three implants are unable to support the arch. This causes the arch to become non-functional.
In All-on-six or All-on-eight implants, the arch stays functional even if one implant fails.
All-on-4 procedures require a minimum bone width of 5 mm in the jaw (maxilla).[3] In cases where the bone width is less than 5 mm, All-on-6 procedure can be used.
The suitability of different full mouth rehabilitation procedures may vary for different individuals. Watch our associate dentist explain the difference between All-on-4, 6, and 8 procedures.
