“My name is Dr. Joaquin Berrón. I am the Head Clinician for the Dentaris Dental Clinics in Cancun, Mexico.
I did my pre graduation in Mexico City in the Intercontinental University. Then I did my post graduation from Universidad Tecnica od Academicaof Mexico City too.
My program was like a GPR as the equivalent of GPR in the United States that is General Practice Residency. In the US it is one year program and in Mexico it is a 2 year program. You basically go through most of these specialties again but in depth – surgical, prosthetic, endodontic and periodontic – those are the basics.
Mine was very focused on the prosthetic portion and then we started already doing it but this is back in 1991 so, implants were just starting in Mexico and we did some of our first surgeries of implants and that is when I got involved.
I got involved in to the implant surgical portion. Then I was working for 15 years, almost 16 years when I finished my post graduation in private practice and of course always having continuous education, going to programs and developing more surgical skills.
Then I went for a program at LSU (Louisiana State University) in New Orleans, US, where I did first a one year Implant and Aesthetic Fellowship and then after that, my Chairman, at that time, asked me to stay and coordinate the program.
I had two fellows under me and all the prosthetic residents and basically from my fellows I would do a lot of surgical training with them because they were all prosthodontists. This is a program created for prosthodontists to get more skilled in surgery because it is a perfect marriage – surgery and prosthetics, they need to go together.
The program, I can tell you is more to develop the surgical training of the prosthodontist and then for the cross residents can oversee the prosthetic parts they were doing more than anything.
So, instead of being a one year program, it ended up being 5 year thing. It was a very humbling experience to teach at that degree because you are with all the people that write books and are doing surgery and doing all these cases with them. It is a very interesting and very satisfying experience.”
